Back From MEDC 2006 and Session Downloads

Posted by on Sunday, May 14, 2006 (PST)

I am back from MEDC 2006! The code, lab manual, and slide deck from my presentation "Dissecting the Windows CE Build Process" (ILL347) are available in this article.

Though I was only able to stay at the conference for two days, I enjoyed meeting with some of you, and hearing about the latest regarding Windows CE 6.0 (code named Yamazaki).  Over the next few weeks, I will be engaged in study and testing of this latest beta release distributed at the MEDC.  I hope to produce an article or two along the way to describe a few of it's new capabilities.  Stay tuned.

In the mean time, I have placed a copy of the slide deck, lab manual, and code files in the download section for the Instructor Led Lab (ILL347) I presented at the conference, “Dissecting the Windows CE Build Process“.  Please feel free to examine them and ask any questions.

And let me also apologize for the difficulties which emerged during the Lab.  I know it was difficult to keep up with me as I presented the material, as I became a bit too focused on making sure that I covered each Exercise in the available time.  Thankfully, the Lab Manuals should be detailed enough for you to complete the labs on your own, though as I said before, feel free to ask any questions or offer any corrections you might have.

Are you going to do the same lab session at the MEDC in Nice? I looked at the presentation and the samples and they're the best description of CE 5.0 build process I've ever seen (I should say that I haven't seen many... but this is not your or my fault). I'll attend the european MEDC 2006 edition and I would like to get a better knowledge of CE 5.0 while discovering the new release.

No I won't be attending MEDC Europe, though I would have loved to visit Nice.    One of my colleagues, David Heil, will be attending, not to present this particular Instructor-Led-Lab, but for a presentation on Power Management and Wireless Lan Security.  You might want to just stop be and say hello, and tell him that you frequent LearningCE.com.

I must say that I was very happy to hear your kind words regarding this presentation.  It did not go as smoothly as I had hoped, despite many weeks of preparation.  I just got too focused on trying to present a topic that just doesn't translate well into a verbal demo.  This lab would probably have worked better as a self guided “Hands-On-Lab”.  Just knowing that you got something out of it, however, makes me feel much better.

Thanks again,

Jim

I think that CE build process is a complex topic and explaining it is not easy. Also many people like IDEs because they hide the complexity of the build system, but I think that spending some hours trying to understand it will avoid losing many hours investigating build errors or "strange" behaviours. You did an excellent work documenting CE 3.0 build process in your book and the only thing I would like to see added to your presentation is a flow-chart that explains the full process but I know that putting it inside a slide is not easy!
