Windows CE Shared Source Contest

Posted by on Monday, May 29, 2006 (PST)

A new contest has been announced from Microsoft for creating a project that uses either or both of the recently released Shared Source components.

A contest has just been announced for a real-world project that uses the Windows CE WebCam driver and/or Windows CE DVR engine shared source components.  I can easily see how this could be used to create some very cool projects.  Have a spare platform sitting around, or even an old “CEPC”?  Then use these components to create a self-contained security device that records video from the WebCam device to a CFCard using the DVR engine.  Too bad we don't have CE drivers for a video capture card, or I could easily see making myself a PVR device out of my eBox.  It sure would take up less space than my Media Center PC, and would be a lot quieter.  Perhaps this would be a good option for the next project.

I am limited on time, so I don't think I will be competing (lucky for you because I would probably win ), but I would love to assist with the brainstorming process.  I might also be of help with any issues that come up for you, though if my help is truely useful I might want you to send me your xBox 360 for a little while.

More information on this contest is available here.

Jim

P.S. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Microsoft Shared Source go here for more information on the licensing terms.  You are actually allowed to create commercial derivatives without notifying Microsoft or sharing the modified source code.  I don't know of any other Open Source license that provides this feature, and it is truely amazing.  Perhaps this represents an accurate perception of the value of source code as intellectual property.  As I have always said, intellectual property lies not in the source code, but in the ability to make use of it in new products.

Jim
