My name is James Y. Wilson. Why the “Y” you ask? Well, you couldn’t pick a more common name than James Wilson. Just try Googling the name James Wilson and you will see first hand just how common my name is. So to differentiate myself in cyberspace, I have tried to use my middle initial as much as possible.
First and foremost I am an engineer. More specifically a software engineer. Though we are often the mules of the technology world, I can’t think of a more enjoyable, more noble a profession than that of engineering. If you are an engineering student, I truly believe that you have chosen the right profession. And thankfully, unlike some professions, ours is one that can provide a reasonable living.
Secondly, I am an amateur robot researcher. I call myself an amateur because I lack the impressive list of credentials that so many others in this field have accumulated through years of research and publication. If you are one of those people I would call a professional robot researcher, please include me in your fan base. I believe that you (and me to some extent) are at the forefront of a new industry in consumer and industrial robots. Today we may labor in obscurity, but the day will come when robots will be as common as the automobile.
Thirdly, I am a devotee of Windows CE. I have worked with CE since its early days, have written a book on the subject with Aspi Havewala called “Building Powerful Platforms With Windows CE”, a number of articles, presented various sessions at Microsoft Embedded DevCon's, and most importantly, have lived and worked with this OS on a number of projects. As embedded OS’s go, CE is the most flexible, the most well integrated, by far the most cost effective, way to go far a variety of device types. I could go on, but I am sure you have your own opinion on this subject. If so, leave me a comment.
Lastly, I am a Microsoft Embedded MVP, an honorary status conferred by Microsoft on those who support the community. This gives me an inside track on what is happening with Windows CE as it continues its evolution, and has been a most valuable tool over the years.
