WinCE - appropriate
By mornao on Thursday, July 07, 2005 (PST)
Originally programmed MS-DOS/EPOC/FreeDOS/QNX C++ but got involved with WinCE 4.2 device for collecting data - and have struggled. Why is it so difficult to do, understand, impliment? Anything (like Petzold, Bolling, Weng) that explains this should be applauded, but some speed please! Would suggest as a starting point a UML description of the function.

Sounds like you have been around this industry for awhile, just as I have.

With regard to why Windows CE is harder than other embedded OS's, this could be the side effect of offering so much in one box.  Unlike most other embedded OS's, CE provides many features and capabilities already integrated and ready to use.  Fiiguring out just how to select what is needed can be a daunting task.

Also, I don't think Microsoft does a very good job of providing support for enough reference platforms, or Single Board Computers.  The x86 based CEPC type devices are well supported, but other reference platforms must be supported by the vendor.  This works out fine if you have a proactive vendor, but if you don't, then you are forced to figure things out on your own without enough example BSP's to act as a guide.

In my humble opinion, what's really needed is some kind of BSP Wizard that interactively identifieds platform capabilities and attempts to formulate a starting BSP from a database of supported peripherals.

Your UML suggestion is a good one.  I will keep this in mind.

Please stay tuned!

Thanks for the words of encouragement.  Writing is a lonely process and this means a lot.

I will have the first chapter available soon.  And I will definitely need all the editing assistance I can get.
